About Kevin Gates
Kevin Gates (born Kevin Jerome Gilvard) was born to a Puerot Rican mother and an African American father. His family relocated to New Orleans and later settled in Baton Rouge where young Gates had a tumultuous upbringing including an arrest in his early teens for joyriding in a stolen vehicle as a passenger.
But despite this, he began his musical career in 2007 when he signed on to Dead Game Records. His talents grew alongside fellow Baton Rouge natives Boosie Badazz and Webbie in the mid-2000s. The trio collaborated to create Gates’ first mixtape in 2007 and a second the following year. But an arrest paused Gates’ musical career for just over 2 years. But while he was in prison, he claimed to have earned a master’s in psychology through a prison program and was released early for good behavior.
He then went right ack to his music career, earning some buzz with his third mix tape and eventually catching the attention of Lil Wayne’s record label, Young Money Entertainment. He was signed on to the management wing of the label and eventually got the idea of starting his own record label, Bread Winners Association.
Gates continued to rise up in the music world, with 13 mixtapes that led to Luca Brasi 2, which made his third appearance on the Billboard 200 listing in a row. The mixtape featured the single, “I Don’t Get Tired” which became Gates’ first song to make the US Billboard Hot 100.
Since then, Gates went on to become a well-known and celebrated rapper and entrepreneur, using the lessons he picked up to excel in his art.
