Kevin Gates became best known for what has been called “confessional anthems”. These songs blended autobiographical lyrics with Southern beats to create a style all his own. In fact, a review of his debut album said that his honesty and autobiographical style was always part of his artistry. Spin noted that he also combined “melodic tunefulness” and “clenched-teeth street rap”. And recently, he’s shown his skills as a singer showing the talents that have been honed when he trained with the singer, Monica. His lyrics often deal with subjects of depression, poverty, and prison life.

What this means is that his shows are often raw, with real emotions and feeling behind his words. Because Gates often raps and sings about things that he has experienced firsthand. And it’s that level of disclosure that makes his shows feel intimate and makes his fans feel intimately familiar with the artist.
